Women’s health is getting more attention in peptide research than ever before. Scientists are studying how specific peptides act on the systems that shape reproductive health, sexual health, and skin aging.

This is a fast-moving space. New studies come out often, and the quality of that research varies a lot. Below is a clear overview of three research areas and the compounds behind them.

Compounds Being Researched

Kisspeptin | Reproductive and hormonal signaling

Kisspeptin sits near the top of the system that controls reproductive hormones. It signals the brain to start a chain of events that drives the release of hormones tied to fertility, puberty, and the menstrual cycle.

Because it sits so high in that chain, researchers study it as a way to understand and support reproductive function. A comprehensive review describes how kisspeptin has been studied as a regulator of reproductive hormones in both healthy adults and people with certain reproductive conditions.

Two findings show why kisspeptin draws steady interest.

  • Research has shown it increases LH pulsatility in women with hypothalamic amenorrhea, a condition where periods stop.
  • It has been studied for its role in egg maturation, with one study noting a dose-dependent effect in women undergoing IVF.

Kisspeptin has also been studied in the context of polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, one of the most common hormonal conditions in women of reproductive age. Researchers are looking at how kisspeptin signaling differs in PCOS and what that might mean for future work.

PT-141 | Sexual health research

PT-141, also called bremelanotide, works in a different way from most compounds studied for sexual health. It acts on receptors in the brain rather than on blood flow. These are the melanocortin receptors, which are tied to motivation and desire.

That central mechanism is what makes it interesting to researchers. It targets desire at the source rather than the mechanical side of arousal.

PT-141 has one of the deeper research records among peptides studied for women.

It was approved by the FDA in 2019, under the name Vyleesi, for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women. The main studies behind that decision were the Phase 3 RECONNECT trials, which randomized 1,267 women. The research reported improvements in sexual desire and reductions in related distress compared with placebo.

This makes PT-141 one of the few peptides in this category with a defined, approved research history to point to.

GHK-Cu | Skin and visible aging

GHK-Cu is a small copper-binding peptide. It shows up naturally in blood, and its levels drop as we age. Research has documented plasma GHK falling from about 200 ng/mL at age 20 to roughly 80 ng/mL by age 60.

That decline is one reason researchers study it in the context of skin aging. GHK-Cu has been studied for its role in signaling skin cells to produce collagen, elastin, and other building blocks that keep skin firm.

Much of the early work was preclinical, but human research exists too.

  • A skin regeneration review describes GHK-Cu improving the look of aging skin in studies, including reduced wrinkles and increased collagen.
  • A small clinical trial in 21 women reported an average increase in skin collagen density of about 28% after three months of daily topical use.

This area matters for practitioners in aesthetic and longevity settings, where skin research is a core interest.

Where The Research Is Heading

Women’s health peptide research is still young in many areas. Some compounds have decades of study behind them. Others are backed mostly by early or preclinical work.
